Home Remodel Goals

Updated: May 25, 2023

Remodel updates can make a home feel brand new and having you fall back in love with coming home all over again. Remodeling doesn't have to mean breaking down walls, it can also be updates.

Putting money into smart updates is never a bad idea! Your home will be one of your biggest investments in life. You and your home will be thanking you! My first flip home which is pictured above was a 1920's home. The cabinets were basic wood, walls were discolored, light fixtures outdated, fireplace old and run down. To this home, I did not do HUGE updates as I didn't have the budget for it. But instead did logical ones that made a big difference.

Remodel projects can be big or small, figure out your budget and the projects most important to you!

#1 - Kitchen

Painting the cabinets or even simply changing out the face of the cabinets can give your kitchen a facelift. If you're feeling bold, changing out your cabinets entirely gives your kitchen a complete makeover.

TIP: Exchanging the hardware for your cabinets is also an easy update. For my first remodel I removed the original hardware, and spray painted them matt black to save money!

Replace the countertops and sink, I suggest doing so after re-doing the cabinets to make sure they match the vibe. I have also seen people painting their countertops for a cheaper update.

Add a backsplash, I suggest going with a neutral color and nothing crazy! When selling, neutral is always your best bet.

Change out old appliances.

Exchange the light fixtures or fan.

Add a hood vent cover, they can give your kitchen a fancy feel. Easy to build.

If you have extra space to add a coffee/wine bar, they're a cute addition!

Some simple updates: change out your barstools, decorations or kitchen table, trading out decorations is easy and can change the room entirely!

#2 - Bedroom(s)

PAINT. A fresh coat of paint completely changes a room. A recent trend I've seen is people adding accent walls in their bedrooms and framing the wall. This can be a cute idea, but be careful with paint color choices or how well the wood is placed if you go that route!

Painting or replacing old trim is an easy update! In my first flip I painted all the base trim white, it completely changed the room.

Change out your fan or light fixtures.

Adding extra storage or shelving to your closet can give it a cleaner look.

One of the highest traffic rooms in your home is the main bedroom, I know my carpet is ready to go! Replacing flooring or carpet can make the room feel new again. A cheaper route would be getting a large area rug.

A few items that don't mean demolition. Exchanging out your bed frame, bedding, and decorative pillows! If you're wanting to go all out you could change your entire bedroom set, nightstands and all. Redecorating is another easy way to change a rooms feel and look without having to remodel.

"There's always room for improvement"

#3 - Bathrooms

Going big in a bathroom remodel can be spendy but worth it. Replacing flooring, retiling, adding a beautiful new shower, adding a new vanity and sink, exchanging the mirror(s), switching out hardware, adding shelving, and replacing the toilet. These are all ideas for a full bathroom remodel! Make sure you plan your vibes colors before purchasing paint, tile, or a new vanity! TIP: Place your wood and tile samples together with the paint in all of a day's lighting before committing!

If you're not looking to spend an arm and a leg on a new bathroom. There are many small projects you can do to spruce up your bathroom to feel new!

I will repeat PAINT. TIP: Check paint in all lightings of the day before committing.

Cleaning and regrouting the bathtub can be an easy way to get your bathtub or shower looking new again.

Painting your vanity is an easy update and a cheaper option, versus replacing it. Painting or changing out the hardware on your current vanity can also give it a new feel! In my last remodel I painted the vanity and the hardware, only replaced the countertop to save money!

Add a shelf, simple yet cute.

Changing out light fixtures and mirrors can change the whole vibe! TIP: Simply changing out yellow-colored lightbulbs with white can brighten a room!

Exchange or paint current your hardware: ex. towel rack & shower fixtures.

It can also be as easy as redecorating the bathroom and changing the theme!

#4 - Living Area(s) - Up & Down

My most recent favorite add in remodels is fireplaces, you can never go wrong adding a cozy spot in your home!

Updating flooring is a bigger project, but one that can change the room entirely. For example, my current living room/kitchen is half carpet and half laminate flooring. I plan to rip out the carpet and laminate and do a light wood flooring all the way through continuing up the stairs to the main bedroom to make it feel more open.

For me I am not a huge fan of carpet, mostly because I have pets. AND pet hair is gross in carpet and never fully comes out in my opinion. The less carpet the better.

PAINT. Painting or replacing old trim can also be an easy update. If you have a fireplace, paint or refinish it!

A new trend that I am loving is adding wood beams to the ceiling, giving off a rustic vibe.

Add a window! An easy way to brighten up your living space.

Change out light fixtures or your fan, chandeliers are also coming in and I'm here for it!

Not all updates have to be huge, you can do simple updates as well! Changing out curtain rods and curtains is an easy way to update a room. New furniture can be spendy but can completely transforms a room, even just a new couch or coffee table can make a difference.

Redecorating is another simple way to update a room without having to remodel!

For the basement living area, adding a wet bar or movie area can be great additions!

#5 - Garage

Adding extra storage or shelving can give your garage a cleaner look!

I suggest a bench for hanging winter coats and shoes. Looks cute, and saves you from tracking snow and dirt into the house!

Finishing and painting your garage is never a bad idea.

If you're feeling ambitious, refinishing the floor in the garage can have it looking brand new.

Have a tall garage with extra space up top? Add a cute hangout spot for game nights or kids to play!

Exchanging out your garage door, painting it could be a cheaper option. I have also seen fake windows being added to garage doors to give it a fancier look. This trend I'm not sure about.

Changing out light fixtures inside and outside your garage is an easy update!

Big or Small

Updating and remodeling your home can give you that giddy feeling of going home again! Alot of projects can be done yourself as well, I did my first remodel completely off YouTube videos and Pinterest!

TIP: Pick out the rooms you spend the most time in to start off your remodel, whether it's for yourself or selling. Money is best spent in areas most used!
